In the recording and/or reproducing apparatus of the type described above, the recording medium is normally rotated at a high speed in the order of 10,000 rpm. A recording head is moved in a radial direction of the recording medium. The recording head is fed to a position close to a point at which the recording medium is rotated. In order to obtain a good recording on the recording medium, the recording medium and the recording head are desirably brought to a full-close contact with each other by means of a suction device which is supported to the recording and/or reproducing apparatus. When the recording medium is a disc-like medium, the full-close contact of the disc and the recording head is usually performed at a time of reproduction. When the recording medium is a tape-like medium, the full-close contact of the disc and the recording head is performed during a recording operation. A variety of vacuum pads have been proposed to be used for such a full-close contact. These vacuum pads are mostly supported to a shaft which is fixed to a base plate of the recording and/or reproducing apparatus and is parallel to the radial direction of the recording medium. The vacuum pads are moved with the recording head along the shaft, by using a pneumatic cylinder. The vacuum pads are moved toward and away from the recording medium in the radial direction, according to a current position of the recording head along the shaft. The current position of the recording head is detected by use of a position detecting sensor. However, a trouble has arisen in the conventional recording and/or reproducing apparatus, because the vacuum pad is moved along the shaft by means of the pneumatic cylinder. This is described in greater detail in the following. (1) The vacuum pad is moved along the shaft in a direction opposite to the radial direction of the recording medium, in
